The more he kills, however, the more he becomes willing to lower his ethics. When the FBI and an American detective L decide to take on this so-called God Kira and enact justice, Light takes offense. He decides that he will find out Ls name and face, so that he can murder him and avoid jail time like a common criminal. The story has been a manga, an anime, a musical, several live action films and a TV drama in Japan. Light’s morality changes in each adaptation, but he remains a semi-sympathetic protagonist. Rather than waste their time with dubious cases (other than the occasional politically driven corruption case), perhaps rational prosecutors prosecute only the most obviously and gruesomely guilty. “ For this reason, Light in Japan resents that the justice system doesn’t go far enough. He wants people to stop committing crimes, and to stop doing terrible things. In the case of Misa Amane, her parents’ killer would have evaded justice due to red tape. Light cuts through bureaucracy by just writing a name. In the Japanese films, Light says that he wants to fix this system. The United States, in contrast, has broken justice and prison systems. Many comedians, from Adam Destroys Everything to John Oliver, have pointed out that the system strongly favors those who are affluent and white, with corporations that keep people in jail, expensive bails, corrupt cops, and overworked public defendants. We also have a prison population larger than any other country in the first world because we dont have sustainable programs for rehabilitating those on parole, or assisting the mentally ill. There would thus be a lot of problems of Light killing those convicted and serving time, especially since justice is disproportionately served. The Problems of Whitewashing Light I am concerned that they have made Light into a white American teenager, ostensibly affluent, with blond hair. Its been shown that, thanks to cultural and media biases, that Caucasians are more likely to stereotype nonwhite Americans and foreigners as criminals. And there are already dozens of authority figures in Light’s position, who determine who lives and who dies. The Guardian has published multiple articles on them. Turning Light into a Caucasian also shuts out the role to many potential Asian actors. More than one critic has pointed this out.  Keeping Light Japanese in the dramas in Japan kept him an everyman. He could have worshipers within the show, and even sympathizers. Light for all his smarts could be anyone in Japan corrupted by that power, and happened to be the genius teen of a police chief. It also implies that Light cannot be a compelling protagonist unless he is white. We saw this problem with the Ghost in the Shell film, which has lost to Boss Baby in terms of box office hits. Murder Culture in America I cant speak for Japan, but the United States has a disturbing worship of killing others, mainly non white people. The woman who killed young Emmet Till by accusing him of whistling at her has since recanted but refuses to apologize for her complicit racism. Modern Murder In this day and age, the worship of murder remains strong. O.J. Simpson has capitalized on his fame, as one example. Trayvon Martins death has become an icon sold on memorabilia, and George Zimmerman has become a minor celebrity for stalking and shooting a teenager. L being American and the FBI participating do not change the story. Our detective wants the thrill of solving a difficult crime. He knows his suspect is in Japan, and focuses on catching Kira, rather than on the idea of justice. Light would most likely go to jail if caught, and be tried in Japan. I favor turning L into a black guy. In American media, most black people are typecast into minor roles. Our antagonist refuses to lie in a menial role. L is amoral, and sometimes stoops to Kiras level. He is also a cool, worthy opponent for Light. L as a black guy also becomes aware of the inherent American bias towards non white people. He wouldnt fear Kira because the police would try and kill L every day, on a regular basis. L would have to know about the judicial and media biases that would ensue when trying to enact justice. Thus his ethnicity some of the unfortunate implications cited above. The Verdict L may save the movie. Light and Mia could kill it. Ryuk will probably be the most accurate character. Based on the trailer, we will see a lot of creative deaths. In any case, the odds are highly against one actors ability to save a movie. I hope that the writers take into account the implications of translating such a concept. They have a lot of work on their hands. The screenwriter and director will have to tread carefully in August to avoid this. Making L Black Despite these points,   Netflix seems to have gotten L right. L being American and the FBI participating do not change the story. Our detective wants the thrill of solving a difficult crime. He knows his suspect is in Japan, and focuses on catching Kira, rather than on the idea of justice. Light would most likely go to jail if caught, and be tried in Japan. I favor turning L into a black guy. In American media, most black people are typecast into minor roles. Our antagonist refuses to lie in a menial role. L is amoral, and sometimes stoops to Kiras level. He is also a cool, worthy opponent for Light. L as a black guy also becomes aware of the inherent American bias towards non white people. He wouldnt fear Kira because the police would try and kill L every day, on a regular basis. L would have to know about the judicial and media biases that would ensue when trying to enact justice. Thus his ethnicity some of the unfortunate implications cited above. The Verdict L may save the movie. Light and Mia could kill it. Ryuk will probably be the most accurate character. Based on the trailer, we will see a lot of creative deaths. In any case, the odds are highly against one actors ability to save a movie. I hope that the writers take into account the implications of translating such a concept. They have a lot of work on their hands. James A. Van Allen Biography

You cant see it or feel it, but more than a thousand miles above Earths surface, theres a region of charged particles that protects our atmosphere from destruction by the solar wind and cosmic rays. Its called the Van Allen belt, named for the man who discovered it.   Meet the Belt Man Dr. James A. Van Allen was an astrophysicist best known for his work on the physics of the magnetic field that surrounds our planet. He was particularly interested in its interactions with the solar wind, which is a stream of charged particles flowing from the Sun. (When it slams into our atmosphere, it causes a phenomenon called space weather). His discovery of radiation regions high above Earth followed up on an idea held by other scientists that charged particles could be trapped in the uppermost part of our atmosphere.  Van Allen worked on Explorer 1, the first U.S. artificial satellite to be placed in orbit, and this spacecraft revealed the secrets of Earths magnetosphere. That included the existence of the belts of charged particles that bear his name.   James Van Allen was born in Mount Pleasant, Iowa on September 7, 1914. He attended Iowa Wesleyan College where he received his Bachelor of Science degree. He went on to the University of Iowa and worked on a degree in solid state physics, and took a Ph.D. in nuclear physics in 1939. Wartime Physics Following school, Van Allen accepted employment with the Department of Terrestrial Magnetism at the Carnegie Institution of Washington, where he studied photodisintegration.Thats a process where a high-energy photon (or packet) of light is absorbed by an atomic nucleus. The nucleus then splits to form lighter elements, and releases a neutron, or a proton or an alpha particle. In astronomy, this process occurs inside certain types of supernovae.   In April 1942, Van Allen joined the Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) at Johns Hopkins University where he worked to develop a rugged vacuum tube and did research on proximity fuzes (used in explosives and bombs). Later in 1942, he entered the Navy, serving in the South Pacific Fleet as an assistant gunnery officer to field test and complete operational requirements for the proximity fuzes. Post-War Research   After the war, Van Allen returned to civilian life and worked in high altitude research. He worked at the Applied Physics Laboratory, where he organized and directed a team to conduct high-altitude experiments. They used V-2 rockets captured from the Germans.   In 1951, James Van Allen became head of the physics department at the University of Iowa. A few years later, his  career took an important turn when he and several other American scientists developed proposals for the launch of a scientific satellite. It was to be part of the research program conducted during the International Geophysical Year (IGY) of 1957-1958. From Earth to the Magnetosphere After the success of the Soviet Unions Sputnik 1 launch in 1957, Van Allen ¹s Explorer spacecraft was approved for launch on a Redstone rocket. It flew on January 31, 1958, and returned enormously important scientific data about the radiation belts circling the Earth. Van Allen became a celebrity due to the success of that mission, and he went on to achieve other important scientific projects in space. In one way or another, Van Allen was involved in the first four Explorer probes, the first Pioneers, several Mariner efforts, and an orbiting geophysical observatory. James A. Van Allen retired from the University of Iowa in 1985 to become Carver Professor of Physics, Emeritus, after having served as the head of the Department of Physics and Astronomy from 1951. He died of heart failure at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City on August 9, 2006. In honor of his work, NASA named two radiation belt storm probes after him. The Van Allen Probes were launched in 2012 and have been studying the Van Allen Belts and near-Earth space. I, Nimra Khan, am an Early Childhood Education student, who got the opportunity to work with children in a Kindergarten setting. By getting the chance to observe children and interact with them, I learned a great deal about how important appreciative inquiry is. It taught me to be objective and open-minded, and how crucial it is to acknowledge and appreciate that each child is unique in its own way. Children are highly underestimated in their abilities and skills and it is important to recognize how intelligent they are in different ways by detailed observations and interactions. It also includes amendment to other laws like Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. The main purpose of this complex legislation is to provide Americans with affordable health insurance and quality care. â€Å"The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has determined that the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is fully paid for.
